Last night at The NYC Anchorage I saw one of the weirdest shows I've ever been to. Praxis, led by Bill Laswell on bass, Buckethead (literally a guy with a bucket on his head) on guitar, somebody from Lenny Kravitz's band on drums, DJ Soulslinger (a NYC jungle producer) on turntables spinning something, one of the X-men or the Skratch Pickls on turntables scratching, and somebody else (maybe DXT, maybe an X-man or Pikl) on keyboard or turntable (I couldn't see). All playing at once. It was like an ambient heavy metal show, and it was actually really good. It must have been improv, because every once in a while they hit an incredible groove, with guitar/bass noise, scratching undernneath, some mediocre loud drumming, plus some weird jungle atmospherics that became evident when the rest of the noise died out. Plus, there were lots of electronic sounds, samples, etc. it was metal with nowhere to go, and I liked it a lot. LESSON_go to shows at the Anchorage, you never know what you'll get (yes I'm an intern there, yes we need people to come to the shows, no my review was not positive because of this, I actually liked the show) 1 Does anyone have any more info on the show? Who was on what instrument, who are Laswell, Buckethead, DXT? 2 How rare is Basscad EP on CD? A music store near me has a few copies. 3 Has anyone heard Altered Beats?(I think that's what it's called) It's either by a member of the X-men or of the Pickls, and it's a double CD of scratching. review? who is laswell? my friend, i dont even know where to begin...lets just say that he is one of the most important people in music currently, and will be one of the greatest historically...hes worked with anyone whos anyone, including eno, jah wobble, golden palominos, material, namlook, paul schutze, klaus schultze, the list is endless...i urge u to go to the hyperreal pages and research this man..in praxis, he plays bass, buckethead plays guitar and the infamous brain plays drums...dxt is turntable guy...

I saw this same bunch of people doing the same thing a year ago at the Knitting Factory and it was insane. That was my first intro to the xmen and pikles and I've never stopped hunting them down.

** DXT (aka DST) is a very old school DJ, a world champion several times, a legend. ** Laswell has done everything from playing bass on Brian Eno's Ambient records to producing Motorhead's Orgasmatron to being a Golden Palomino to touring with Laurie Anderson to re-uniting the members of Parliament and Funkadelic for several major projects. With James Brown in his dotage, Laswell is easily the hardest working man in show business. Also a legend. ** Buckethead. Who knows who he really is? Plays a mean giutar faster than anyone I've even seen and has absolutely no rock-god pretentions like an inwie malmsteen ro something. Did he do the thing where he picks up a fake hand and plays guitar with the fake hand instead of the real one?

Altered Beats (Axiom) is a compilation, produced by laswell of several turntable godz, including xmen, pikls, dxt, prince paul, and others. It's pretty great, and covers a wide breadth of artsy turntablism. I love it. -CF
